Ballast Water Treatment, new regulations due on 2016
In meeting a fast growing demand for installing Ballast Water Treatment Systems where an estimated 40,000 ships must be fitted with a type approved systems by 2020, IMS has 21 years of proven experience in equipment retrofits carried out on voyage while in normal service.
Several of the suppliers of these systems have now completed their type approval process. Ship owners and managers are evaluating which system will suit their needs best for their existing fleet and how to accommodate the installation. With a shipping market hit hard by the financial crisis, alternative solutions where time and cost can be saved without jeopardizing safety are being evaluated.
IMS is working in close cooperation with the suppliers and the owners technical representatives in carrying out the retrofit while in service. With a thorough safety and risk analysis combined with an innovative approach, majority of the installation can be carried out without any down time or off-hire of the vessel. The critical components can typically be installed during the first scheduled dry-dock dependent on the specific vessel’s deadline of the installation.
There certainly will be a shortage in qualified personnel and facilities to meet this growing demand with a deadline approaching fast.
IMS is ready to assit ship owners and mangers in reducing this shortage, saving cost and time.
